Where the sharks are residents, not visitors.

A single island astride the equator, with neither lagoon nor shelf: open ocean arrives at the shore, and the tigers see little reason to leave. We compose the whole journey around the diving and sell it as one confirmed booking.

The island

An island with nothing
to hide behind.

Almost every Maldivian atoll is a ring of reef drawn about a shallow lagoon: sheltered water within, and a long passage out to anything of consequence. Fuvahmulah has neither ring nor lagoon. It stands alone on the equator with the open ocean arriving at its shore, so the pelagic species that would ordinarily keep their distance are found within minutes of the harbour.

That proximity is the whole of the appeal, and equally the whole of the caveat. There is no lagoon to retreat to. Currents run, every entry is made from a working harbour, and the dives are gated on certification and logged experience rather than on goodwill. This is not a resort house reef.

The diving

Three dives, and what
each asks of you.

Each asks something different of you, and the requirements below are not suggestions. Prices are per diver and exclude equipment; certification is verified as the trip is built, so nothing is sold that you are not entitled to dive.

Tiger Shark Dive

$165from · per diver

Nearly every shark encounter on earth is a seasonal affair. Fuvahmulah's tigers are resident: the same animals, over the same shallow sand off the harbour, in every month of the year. Briefed and guided in small groups.

Open Water or above

One per operator, per day

Dive insurance and signed waiver

Reef Dive

$95per diver

The island's own wall, and where most divers begin. Thresher sharks pass the day at depth and rise at first light to be cleaned in the shallows, which is why the dawn boat is the one that finds them.

Open Water or above

Blue Water Dive

$120per diver

Off the shelf altogether: no bottom beneath you, no reef to take hold of, and nothing in view against which to judge your depth. Buoyancy becomes a matter entirely your own, which is what the Advanced card and the fifty logged dives are truly for. Oceanic whitetips, and whatever else happens to be passing.

Only on Off Grid Holidays

Three tiger dives,
one day.

Ask any dive centre on Fuvahmulah for three tiger dives in a single day and the answer will be no. They are not being obstructive: no one operator may sell you more than one. Two limits govern what is possible here, and set against one another they yield a number most divers are never offered.

3
dives per guest, per day The island’s hard limit, counted across every operator rather than per dive centre.
1
tiger dive per operator, per day Each dive centre may take you on one, and will not sell you a second that day.
3
tiger operators on Fuvahmulah Pelagic Divers, Fuvahmulah Dive School and Liquid Shark Divers: all three approved partners here, with live capacity from each.
3
tiger dives in a single day, on one booking Booking all three means booking three separate operators for the same day. Off Grid Holidays is the only place you can do that in one go.

Non-negotiable

Four limits that do not move.

Each exists for a reason, and none bends for a booking. They are enforced as the trip is built rather than at the dock, so a combination that breaks one simply will not price: a considerably better place to discover it than the Maldives with your bags already packed.

3

Dives per guest, per day

Counted across every operator on the island, not per dive centre.

1

Tiger dive per operator, per day

Each dive centre takes you once a day. Three operators, so three is the most that is possible.

0

Night dives

Fuvahmulah does not run them. Nobody on the island will sell you one.

3

Documents before you get on the boat

Certification card, dive insurance, signed waiver. Collected at checkout.

Equipment rental: $10 per item per day, or $30 per day for a full set. One rental day covers three dives.

How it works

Four steps, one payment.

Step 1

Browse

Islands, stays, dives and everything above water, with the real prices and the real requirements.

Step 2

Build the trip

Put the pieces together. Certification gates are checked as you go, not at the airport.

Step 3

Pay in full

One payment covers the lot. Off Grid Holidays is the seller of record.

Step 4

Confirmed

Confirmations, invoice and itinerary by email. Request-only items stay marked as requests until we place them.

One confirmed booking

Everything is booked here rather than direct with each partner. Pay in full and it is confirmed, and no partner can reject a confirmed booking after the fact.

Verified partners

Every dive centre, guesthouse and operator is reviewed and approved before it appears here.

We fix it

If a partner cannot deliver, we arrange the replacement, the credit or the refund. Ours to sort out, not yours.

Best window: November to April

A single sentence is enough to begin. We return with a route, firm dates, and a price that already accounts for every certification requirement.
