Three tiger dives in one day: how the maths actually works

Ask a dive centre on Fuvahmulah to put you on three tiger dives in a single day and you will be told no. That answer is correct, and it is worth understanding why, because the same facts also explain how three is possible.

Two limits, not one

Two separate rules govern tiger diving on the island, and they are often confused with each other.

The island caps every diver at three dives per day. This is counted per guest across the whole island: not per dive centre. You cannot reset the count by switching boats in the afternoon.

Each operator will take you on one tiger dive per day. That is the centre's own limit, and they will not sell you a second one that day regardless of how you ask.

Where the number three comes from

Put the two together. Any single operator can sell you exactly one tiger dive. Fuvahmulah has three tiger operators: Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah, Fuvahmulah Dive School and Liquid Shark Divers.

Three operators, one tiger dive each, and an island allowance of three dives a day. Three tiger dives is therefore the physical maximum, and it consumes your entire allowance for that day.

There is no fourth. It is not a matter of budget or persuasion; the arithmetic simply stops there.

The part that is genuinely difficult

Reaching three means holding a confirmed place with three different businesses, on the same date, with capacity on each boat at the right time of day. Arranged individually that is three separate conversations, three deposits and three things that can fall through independently, and if the second one drops out after you have paid for the first, you are the one holding the problem.

Three tiger dives in a day is a lot of time in the water with a large predator, and it rewards divers who know what they are looking at.
